Position Summary

The primary purpose of the Planner / Associate Buyer position is to maintain scheduling for the shop floor and assist in identifying and executing on purchase requirements. The Planner/ Associate Buyer will be responsible for understanding and acting on the requirements coming from MRP, directly tied to Production and Purchasing.  This will include releasing jobs to the floor and converting purchase requisitions into purchase orders.  It's a process that involves critical thinking and taking action to provide the necessary execution for all sales order and forecast requirements, while controlling inventory levels and supporting our serviceability targets. This is a highly visible position as it will interact with all department heads in the shop.  This includes:

  • Creating and maintaining production schedule, coordinating dispatch lists, and prioritizing job tickets for production optimization.
  • Analyzing MRP data and acting on advice to support raw material supply, forecast and finished goods demand
  • Purchasing raw materials on the spot, as needed
  • Managing schedules for subcontract operations to maintain serviceability standards
  • Executing MRO buys for all shop requirements

Duties and Areas of Responsibility:

  • Create and maintain documents needed for production.
  • Prepare scheduling reports, including job priority lists for weekly production meetings.
  • Run weekly production meeting, set priorities for the supervisors
  • Execute end of month research and adjustments to correct negative inventory balances.
  • Produce job tickets for the fabrication department, coordinated with our forecast planning and monthly shipping schedules.
  • Expediting jobs through all production steps when needed.
  • Explore cost reduction opportunities with suppliers through various means including quantity discounts, combined production runs and inventory programs.
  • Conduct open purchase order reviews to maintain & improve supplier lead times.
  • Ensure timelines for Engineering Projects are met as it relates to scheduling for the shop, purchases, and other related costs.
  • Work with suppliers on a daily basis to prioritize ongoing requirements.
  • Assist with master data maintenance for demand planning, capacity scheduling and inventory management.
  • Enter and maintain accurate records of transactions with material control and delivery date requirements.
  • Verify that all contract administration procedures with our suppliers and customers are followed.
  • Interact with shop floor management on a daily basis to resolve issues regarding manufacturing efficiencies or as requested from Manufacturing, Customer Service, and/or Purchasing
  • Prepare reports and documents for backlog and backorder priorities, capacity utilization and inventory safety stock. Coordinating efforts with Final Assembly Scheduling in support of our serviceability targets.
  • Manage the identification system for all inventory parts, assuring part numbers and other necessary information identify cartons and skids for all on hand inventory
  • Maintain safety stock and reorder points for expensed items.
  • Assist in all cycle count / physical inventory activities, and other vendor managed inventories.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position Qualification Requirements:


  • Bachelors Degree preferred or 3-5 years equivalent experience in production scheduling within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong understanding of demand planning through MRP systems, supplier selection processes and fixed standard costs.
  • High level of interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to build positive working relationships across organizational lines.
  • Be able to adjust priorities in response to unanticipated events and to function effectively in ambiguous situations.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel/Office.


  • Experience working with MRP systems and Sub Contract operation planning.
  • Shop floor scheduling driven by both forecast projections and a sales order demand pull system.
  • Experience with pricing and/or negotiations.
  • Understanding Lean and other Continuous Improvement activities a plus.
